Time to Exercise


When do you have the most energy? Are you an early bird or a night owl? Studies suggest that we may be stronger & faster in the early evening hours (not me). We are all different.

Yesterday, I went for an early morning run with my dog.  I had to convince myself to go. It wasn’t easy to start but eventually I found my rhythm. When it was over I felt better for it (physically & mentally). The run set a positive tone for my day. I have discovered that I reach my physical peak in the morning. This is when I have the most energy in my day.

Learn to listen to your body. When you can, plan to be active when you have the most energy. This way, there is less of a struggle to do it (mentally & physically) & you will enjoy your activities more. This will help you to stick with it, on the long term.

If you can, find a time of day to exercise when there are few distractions. This will make it easier for you to establish a new routine/habit. For me, early mornings work best in this regard.

Lets face it, life can get busy. When it comes down to it, any time is a good time to exercise. Your body will adjust. If you have to, let others know that you are setting aside a small part of your day to exercise. No one is allowed to interrupt. They are, however, welcome to join you. You are not being selfish, you are setting a good example. Through physical activity you will be healthier, more positive & productive & have fewer injuries.

If you happen to take a break from being active, don’t give-up. Get back to your physical activity routine as soon as you can. Don’t expect to start where you left off. Start slow to prevent injuries (sore muscles & injuries will only discourage you from continuing). It won’t be long before you feel stronger & motivated to stick with it.

If you exercise outdoors then you have to plan around daylight hours. Be safe. The weather will also be a factor. Summer will soon be here. The hottest time of the day is not the best time for outdoor exercise. Find an indoor air conditioned alternative, find a different time or activity or enjoy a rest day.

Plan to be physically active most days of the week. Find a time of day that works best for you. Don’t procrastinate, now is the time to get it done. Make physical activity part of your lifestyle & enjoy the benefits.
